Researchers began exploring the concept of time-sharing, which allowed multiple users to access a single mainframe computer simultaneously through terminals. 

This was a revolutionary idea—it meant computing could be treated as a shared resource, much like today’s cloud servers.

Companies like Salesforce pioneered this model in the late 1990s by offering Software as a Service (SaaS)—applications delivered over the web without installation or local storage. 

This marked a significant step toward modern cloud computing, where software, infrastructure, and platforms are all offered as on-demand services.

While SaaS popularized the idea of remote access, the real breakthrough came with advances in virtualization during the early 2000s. 

Technologies from companies like VMware made it possible to run multiple virtual servers on a single physical machine efficiently.

In 2006, Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), providing developers with virtual servers that could be created and destroyed at will.

For the first time, computing resources were available on-demand, billed by usage, and scalable to meet any workload. 

The concept of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) was born, soon followed by Platform as a Service (PaaS) offerings from Google and Microsoft.

As competition increased, cloud computing rapidly evolved into a multi-layered ecosystem.
