But behind this dazzling technology lies a rich history that began decades before the digital revolution. 


1. The Beginnings: The 1950s and 1960s

The roots of computer animation can be traced back to the 1950s, when computers were first used for visual experiments. 

Early pioneers such as John Whitney Sr., often called the “father of computer graphics,” created abstract animations using analog computers and mechanical devices. 

Whitney’s work combined art and mathematics, showing how technology could generate moving images.

In 1961, another milestone came from Bell Telephone Laboratories, where Edward Zajac produced one of the first computer-generated animations—a wireframe model of a satellite orbiting Earth.

“Terminator 2: Judgment Day” (1991) introduced liquid-metal morphing effects that redefined the limits of visual storytelling.

Technologies such as real-time rendering, AI-assisted animation, and virtual production have changed how media is made. 

Using tools like Unreal Engine and Blender, artists can visualize scenes instantly, collaborate remotely, and blend real footage with computer graphics seamlessly.

Films like “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022) and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (2023) represent the latest stage in CGI’s evolution—combining artistic expression, technical mastery, and storytelling innovation. 

Meanwhile, CGI is also transforming industries beyond entertainment: architecture, medicine, education, and even fashion use 3D visualization and simulation to design, teach, and inspire.
